Our recent winter escapade to the enchanting alpine region of Zillertal in Austria was nothing short of magical, filled with unforgettable experiences that left an indelible mark on our hearts. From the cozy confines of Vaya Zillertal in Aschau to the exhilarating activities that awaited us, every moment was a testament to the beauty and charm of winter in Zillertal.
A Warm Welcome to Vaya Zillertal
Skiing Bliss at Zillertal Arena and Hintertux Glacier: A Winter Wonderland for All
Our skiing adventures at Zillertal Arena and Zillertal 3000 were really fun. Both ski areas provide a diverse range of options for skiers of all levels. While both ski resorts are pretty big, they have dedicated ski slopes for kids that ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. I would say that kids who already can ski a bit and are a bit older, would really much enjoy the ski slopes at Zillertal Arena as they are going through the resort while still having their own path away from other skiers.
For seasoned skiers seeking a challenge, both Zillertal Arena and Zillertal 3000 offer terrain that will push your skills to the limit. From steep descents to thrilling off-piste opportunities, these ski areas provide ample excitement for those looking to test their abilities on the snow. Pro skiers will find themselves in their element, conquering slopes that demand precision and expertise.
Hintertux Glacier has the unique opportunity for all-year skiing, making it a paradise for snow enthusiasts no matter the season. With a network of modern lifts whisking you up to snow-covered slopes beneath the Olperer peak, you can enjoy skiing in the summer sun ( We can’t wait to experience this!! ) or winter chill. The resort’s 365-day snow guarantee ensures that every visit promises endless fun on the slopes.
Snow Hike in Mayrhofen: Finding Serenity in Nature’s Embrace
Venturing into the snow-covered trails of Mayrhofen was a soul-stirring experience that brought us closer to nature’s beauty. Together with Kevin, aka the BergRiese, our snowshoes strapped on and spirits high, we hiked around Möslbahn ski station, breathing in the crisp mountain air and reveling in the tranquility that surrounded us. We reached 2000m exactly at Jausenstation Melchboden where we had breathtaking panorama of the mountains before going back down.
Beer Tasting at Zillertal Beer Museum: A Toast to Tradition
One of the highlights of our trip was the beer tasting experience at the Zillertal Beer Museum. The BrauKunstHaus at Zillertal Bier Museum offers a captivating and interactive exhibition that immerses visitors in the art and science of beer-making. This state-of-the-art museum provides a behind-the-scenes look at the brewing process, from selecting ingredients to bottling and distribution, showcasing the dedication and craftsmanship that have defined Zillertal Bier for generations. The museum tour ends with a tasting of their locally brewed beers. The flavors danced on our palates, offering a glimpse into the rich brewing heritage of the region. It was a toast to tradition and a celebration of community that left us with a newfound appreciation for Austrian beer culture.
Discovering the Ice Palace at Hintertux Glacier : A Journey into Ice
Another highlight of our trip to Zillertal was the visit to the Eis Palast within the Hintertux Glacier. The Eis Palast at Hintertux Glacier is a mesmerizing natural cave that promises a magical experience for visitors of all ages. While it offers a family-friendly excursion, accessing it in winter, especially during heavy snowfall, can present challenges. Proper ski clothes are essential for this adventure; Jeans and sneakers won’t suffice.
The natural cave was only discovered in 2007 by Roman Erler in 2007, and has since become a popular destination for adventurers seeking to marvel at its beauty and purity. Despite its recent discovery, this natural jewel has quickly gained recognition as an ideal year-round excursion spot for those eager to explore its icy depths. A world record was even achieved, adding to the site’s mystique and significance. Indeed, Christian Redl was the first person to dive 23 meters deep into an ice shaft in less than a minute without a compressed air tank! There is in fact, a unique feature of this cave, water flows within its icy walls and you can even go for a little ride.
In conclusion, Zillertal in winter is a paradise for adventure seekers and relaxation enthusiasts alike. While this blog post has provided just a glimpse into the wonders of Zillertal, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy, whether you’re a seasoned skier or simply looking to immerse yourself in the breathtaking winter scenery.
As the snow begins to melt and the landscape transforms once again, we eagerly anticipate the opportunity to explore Zillertal in the summer months, discovering new adventures and experiencing the area in a different light.
